Abuja Unity Polo: Trade Mark edges out Almat Group to clinch President’s Cup

Defending champions, Rubicon, edged Trade Mark 6 – 4 1/2 in a closely fought final game, to emerge winners of the President’s Cup.
The match which was the biggest prize of the tournament saw half a goal been awarded to Trade Mark to level the team’s handicap.
Trade Mark who were looking to win the cup for the very first time in the history of the tournament boosted of a very formidable quartet of Aliyu Umar (0), Nasiru Lukat (+1 ), Abba Dantata (+2) and Jamilu Mohammed (+3).
While, Almat Group who had also not won the title before fielded a strong side that included the Badamasi brothers, Abdulmalik (+3), Idris (+3), Nura Suleiman (+1) as well as Abubakar Jugunu (+1).
Almat Group were on the front foot right from the blast of the Umpire’s whistle and deservedly took the lead in the first chukka through two quick goals by Aba Bashir and Abdulmalik Badamasi to make 2 to half a goal at the end of the first chukka.
Almat Group continued from where they left off in the second the chukka as Bashir got his brace from a lovely 30 yard strike, but Trade Mark’s hitman, Jamilu Mohammed replied with a goal of his own to make it 3 to 1 and a half goal.
Jamilu Mohammed had an opportunity to further reduce the goal deficit for Trade Mark towards the end of the chukka but his powerful shot from the centre of the field narrowly missed its target.
Almat Group continued to pile on the pressure on their opponents as Nasiru Suleiman scored two quick goals for his side to take the game further away from their opponents as it ended 5 to 1 and a half goal.
But, Abba Dantata reduced the goal tally, before Suleiman grabbed his hat trick to make it 6 to 2 and a half goal at the end of the third chukka.
The fourth and final chukka was a family affair as both sides shared a goal a piece, one each from Nasiru Lukat and Abdulmalik Badamasi respectively to make it 7 to 3 and a half.
In other matches played on Sunday, Max Air defeated Iyatu Farms 5 to 5 and a half goal to emerge champions of the Legislative Shield in a keenly contested match.
The CECCC Beginners Cup was won by Polo Babies, while the Polo Toddlers finished as runners up.
The late Alhaji Umar Shinkafi Cup (the Marafan Sokoto) was won by Abuja Guards, while Tropicalsno finished as runners up.
The late Alhaji Labaran Kago Memorial Cup was won Max Air, while Iyatu Farms finished as runners up.
The Guards Challenge was won by ASI Polo team, while Alhusna Travels were runners up of the cup.
The Guards Brigade Trophy was won by Bauchi M.A., while AGROTEX Polo team finished as runners up.
The Most Improved Player Award went to Shehu Runz of Alhusna Travels.
The wife of the Kebbi State governor, Her Excellency, Dr.Zainab Bagudu Shinkafi, Minister of State for Aviation,Senator Hadi Sirika, the CECCC Executive Director, Mr Kelvin Lee, the Bauchi State Governor, his excellency Mohammed Abubakar, Former Governor of Kaduna State, Dr Ramalan Yero, were among the high profile dignitaries who graced the 2017 Abuja Unity Polo Tournament closing ceremony.
The tournament which galloped off on Tuesday ended yesterday day.
