An umbrella network of youth associations in Akwa Ibom State known as Akwa Ibom Youths for Good Governance (AIYOGOG), has pleaded with the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field a viable candidate for the 2019 Gubernatorial election in Akwa Ibom State to enable the people enjoy visible democratic dividends and a rapid stream of good governance in all sectors of the state economy.
Speaking to journalists after the body’s joint consultative meeting in Uyo yesterday, the elected president of the coalition, Francis Ikpeme, directed facilitators of the local government areas and wards of AIYOGOG to commence intense and underground grassroots sensitization and mobilization of members in order to rescue Akwa Ibomites from stagnation and visionless governance come 2019 in the state.
He said Gov. Udom Emmanuel was forced on the people during the reign of godfather politics in the state under Chief Godswill Akpabio and he needs to be replaced with a vibrant performer under APC leadership.
Ikpeme, an activist and strongman in grassroots politics in the state alleged that almost all those that assisted Emmanuel to win power have been abandoned because he takes all manner of advice from his godfather.
According to Dr. Ikpeme, the dynamic leadership of APC at the national level should understand that our state is a peculiar one that needs a peculiar approach and careful decision on issues of primaries and fielding a Gubernatorial candidate for the 2019 race.
From our research across the state, he noted that it is ideal for APC to woo Bishop Prof. Sam Akpan into the party as it is only him or Obong Nsima Ekere that can unseat Gov. Udom Emmanuel, if fielded by APC. “These tested and trusted pillars of Akwa Ibom politics were neglected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state while they need to be used to promote and sustain democracy in the state.
