Senate to increase penalty for gas flaring – Lawmaker

The Chairman senate committee on Gas Resources, Bassey Akpan, has said the senate will increase the penalty to be meted out against gas flaring in Nigeria.
According to a statement he issues in Abuja to journalists, the committee will hold a public hearing on the Gas Flaring Prohibition Bill on the 30th of this month to receive inputs from the public and industry stakeholders to ensure a holistic and effective implementation of the Act when eventually passed into law.
He said that Bill will among other things, seek to introduce other market measures to encourage efficient utilization of gas, even as he added that Bill when passed into law, will make it mandatory for operators to submit gas utilization plan within 90 days of the commencement of the Act for effective monitoring.
He said gas flaring in association with crude oil is one of the most dangerous environmental and energy waste practices in Nigerian petroleum industry, pointing out that it affects the environment and human health, resulting in economic loss through loss of trade opportunity, and deprive consumers of a clean and cheaper energy sources.
He said the bill will enhance rapid infrastructural development of the oil and gas sector, enhance revenue to government, as well as improve the lives of the people in the gas region.
Those expected at the event, which will be declared open by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, are the oil international and local oil companies, marginal field operators, government regulatory agencies, among others.
