The National Secretary, Alliance for Democracy, Mr Rafiu Salau, has urged the National Assembly to approve for a referendum on the final decisions of the ongoing National conference.
He said this in Abuja yesterday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Salau, this is theonly way the citizens will have the opportunity to decide on how the country should be governed.
He said: “ Legislators should ensure that referendum is part of the constitution of the country so that the people they represent can make inputs on national issues.
“In democracy people are the masters and this is one of the ways to really prove that notion.”
He said considering a referendum on the decisions of the national Conference would ensure that the efforts put in by the Federal Government in organising the conference would not be in vain.
He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for ensuring that the National Conference turned to reality.
On refusal of some invited stakeholders to participate in the conference, Salau said it showed lack of interest in people’s progress.
According to him, the Conference is an opportunity for all the invited stakeholders to chart a course for the nation.
“Refusal by any invited group to partake in the conference cannot be in the interest of the people. (NAN)
