It was all shock and disbelief as news came yesterday over the death of Abdul Rahman Abba Jimeta, the Chief of Staff to the Adamawa state governor Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla Bindow.
The news of Jimeta’s death which sent jitters down the political landscape of Adamawa state came in the early hours of Monday 18th June 2018 from far away Makkah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The commissioner for information and strategy, Comrade Ahmad Sajoh announced the position of the state government for declaring three days mourning directing workers and citizens to pray for the soul of Abba Jimeta to rest in peace in the bosom of our omnipotent God.
In a press statement, Sajoh highlighted that Abba Jimeta has been buried in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia yesterday afternoon and that he died at the age of sixty leaving behind an aged father, one wife and eleven children.
“It is with a deep sense of grief and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah that, the Adamawa state Government announces the passing away of the chief of staff of the state Government House Yola,Alhaji Abdulrahaman Abba Jimeta.
“The sad event occurred in the early hours of Monday ,the 18th of June, 2018 in Makkah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he (COS) went for Umrah (lesser Hajj) and according to the family will be buried in the afternoon of Monday ,18th of June ,2018”.The statement added.
Abdulrahman Abba Jimeta was born about sixty years ago to the Family of Alhaji Abba Jimeta and started his educational pursuit at Yelwa Primary school Jimeta in 1968. He had his post primary education at Famous Arabic Teachers College Gombe,Gombe state in 70s before proceeding to Advanced Teachers College Kano for his National Certificate in Education (N.C.E) .
Not satisfied with his educational pedigree,Young Abba secured admission into University of Maiduguri and graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Education.While back to Yola early 90s he was employed as a lecturer at College of Education Hong up to the emergence of democracy where he swapped courtesy of Former Senate Leader,Senator Silas Jonathan Zwingina.
In his political voyage which started at the Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar camp in 1999,Abdulrahaman came to limelight due to his visible and inspiring oratorical powers when ever he addresses political crowds .This quality brought him near Atiku Abubakar with whom he had related actively with.
When Atiku was elected Governor of Adamawa state in 1999 before his elevation to the position of Vice President by President Olusegun Obasanjo, his running mate Governor Boni Haruna continued with the script of Atiku by appointing Abba a Senior Special Assistant until they concluded their two terms of office in 2011.
Immediately Governor Murtala Nyako was elected Governor in 2011, he appointed Abba Jimeta as commissioner for Information up to the time Abba had political differences with the Assembly members under the leadership of Speaker Ahmadu Umaru Fintir who refused his confirmation as commissioner in the second tenure where he was appointed Chief of staff until they were impeached by the same Legistors in 2014.
Abba was the Director General of Governor Muhammad Bindow campaign organization that crisscrossed the entire state until they brought victory to the team. A reason that made Abba become most powerful Chief of staff to the Governor as some opined that he was the de facto Governor.
Abba Jimeta will be remembered for his doggedness and eloquent in his political voyage in the state as testified by his elementary class mates below;
Aliyu sidi Jimeta who told this reporter that they were class mates from primary to secondary schools in Jimeta and ATC Gombe in 70s said Abba was an iroko tree that assisted many people in fixing their endeavours.
Sidi stated that late Abba was the North East Cordinator of the ATC Gombe old boys Association and had been shouldering responsibilities to the success of the Association at all times until his departure.
For Barkido Abdullahi and Shekarau Yerima,the demise of Abba has created a big vacuum that will certainly takes long time before it is filled in the schemes of bringing unity of purpose to his people .
