The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), MsOlajumokeAkinjide, has expressed shock over the non-existence of School of Health Technology in the Territory; to train and retrain human resource in its public Primary Health Care (PHC) system. The minister, who is also the supervising minister of Ministry of Police Affairs, expressed this during an interaction with the key implementing stakeholders of the recommendations by the ministerial committee on PHC system rejuvenation in the FCT.
Peoples Daily reports that the FCT has achieved only 12.5 % of minimum required staffing providing the minimum health care package services in the available 32 PHC centres and 183 PHC clinics. She said given the unfortunate situation; the FCT Administration is on a very long walk towards ensuring efficient service delivery in the PHC system in the Territory. However, to address the situation, she said in the meantime, the FCT Administration would before the end of the year set up a School of Health Technology, with an initial space as a temporary base, to kick start the school. According to her, the establishment of the school would serve the objective of capacity building as well as help to address the identified human resource and service problems facing PHC facilities in the nation’s capital. “It is shocking that FCT does not have a school of health technology, to produce the needed human resources for quality health care delivery for the teeming residents of the Territory. “As a matter of urgency we will rent a place or get a space at the health secretariat to start off. “It is absolutely essential that we work towards establishing our own capacity building facilities, to enable us produce the needed human resources for quality health care delivery in the FCT; as we need to have trained personnel to do this,” she stressed.
