Commander Operation Whirl Stroke , OPWS Major. Gen. Adeyemi Yekini has intimated plans to deploy more men to Tyu-Mu in Makurdi local government area of Benue State where Governor Samuel Ortom was attacked by armed Fulani herds men.
This is just as the Special Adviser to Governor Ortom on Security Lt. Col. Paul Hemba disclosed that five (5) bullet shells were recovered at the scene of the incident.
It should be noted that Governor Ortom was last Saturday attacked by armed herdsmen on his farm and had to run more than one kilometer to escape from the marauders.
Conducting newsmen round the scene of the incident yesterday, Gen. Yekini described it as ‘unfortunate’, saying that they had to act swiftly by mobilizing troops from Agasha and Guma to comb the hideout of the herdsmen.
“As I speak to you people, our troops are still there. This is a security breach and we are working hard to address this. We are going to establish a standing patrol in the area to forestall such incident. Our troop have destroyed the forest where the herdsmen have been hiding.
“We have made a lot of progress in Benue. It was a killing galore but we have substantially restored peace in the State “, Gen. Yekini boasted.
“Security Adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom Lt. Col. Paul HembaHemba said the armed herdsmen attacked the Governor of his way from inspecting a makeshift market in the area, adding that troops of OPWS responded quickly and gave them a wild chase but they escaped.
“He said no arrest have been made but three (3) fishermen were picked up for questioning by the Police.
“We commend troop of OPWS for their prompt response even a they are still combing the forest to clear it of armed herdsmen and bandits”, Lt. Col. Hemba said.
