An Assistant Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Yakubu Attah has said that Bauchi Zone RS 12 recorded 86 deaths from 82 road crashes in the first quarter of 2014.
The FRSC Zone 12 comprises of Bauchi, Yobe and Borno states, with the zonal headquarters in Bauchi
Speaking to journalists in Bauchi, he said that apart from those who lost their lives, 160 others were also injured during the period under review.
Mr. Attah, who is the Commander in charge of Jos Zone, but sent to Bauchi on special assignment for the Easter break, attributed most of the crashes to recklessness on the part of some drivers.
He, therefore, called for an increase in the synergy between FRSC and other security agencies like the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
“The Easter period attracts heavy traffic on highways and we are worried over the rate of deaths and injuries caused by the road crashes.
“We are faced with challenges, especially from reckless drivers, who are not listening to our advices,” he said.
Mr. Attah appealed to state governments in the zone, to assist by introducing measures that would help check the excesses of defaulting road users.
He also called on passengers to always play their role by calling reckless drivers to order in the interest of their own personal safety. (NAN)
