The Benue state government has been called upon to sustain the payment of monthly pension to retired workers of the state.
The call was made yesterday by chairmen and secretaries of the 23 local government of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, (NUP) during a courtesy visit to the Acting Executive Secretary of the Local Government Board, Mrs. Beatrice Tsavmbu in Makurdi.
Led by Dennis Anyi, Jackson Ocheme and Terlumun Age, they observed that in the past, pension payment in state had always generated a lot of crises, noting however, that in recent times, the government has improved in the payment of pension.
“We urge government to sustain the new measures in order to alleviate the suffering of pensioners”, they advised. The Acting Board Secretary, Mrs. Tsavmbu told the pensioners that efforts are being made by the board and the state government in tackling the lingering issues of omission of retirees’ name in payment list, adding that plans are on the way to increase the local government pension to be in tune with today’s reality.
She lamented the several litigations against the board and state government which she viewed as a clog in the wheel of progress of the board.
