The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said the passage of the bio-safety bill into law will serve as the only safety valve against the indiscriminate dumping of Genetically Modified Products (GMOs) in Nigeria by the industrialized world.
The Speaker stated this while addressing participants at a one-day sensitization workshop on the need for a bio-safety law in Nigeria held at the National Assembly.
Tambuwal who was represented by the Leader of the House, Rep. Mulikat Akande-Adeola at the event stressed the timeliness of the workshop as well as the importance of a bio-safety law in the nation’s quest to attain food security and economic development by the year 2020.
Appraising the essence of a bio-safety law to the attainment of food security in Nigeria, the sponsor of the bill, Rep Nkem Uzoma Abonta (PDP-Abia) told participants of the importance of having a society that is capable of feeding its teeming populace and the consequences of not been able to do so and added that food security is not a negotiable policy for a nation that must achieve targeted goals of development and security.
