A 30-year old businessman, Benjamin Yusuf, 32, has appeared in an Upper Area court, in Kado, Abuja for alleged cheating.
Yusuf, a resident of Prince and Princess Estate in Gudu, Abuja, was arraigned on one-count charge of cheating.
The prosecutor, Sgt Simon Ibrahim, told the court that one Ms Onyiyechi Igwe of No. 63 Mabolo Street, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, lodged a report against the accused at the Utako police station on March 10.
Ibrahim said that the accused collected N240, 000 from the complainant on February 23 with a promise to return same the next day but did not.
He said when the complainant asked for her money the accused took her to a bank.
The prosecutor further said that the accused pretended to have withdrawn some dollars with which he said he intended to pay the complainant after changing the money to Naira.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 322 of the Penal code.
If convicted, he is liable to three years in prison or with an option to pay fine or with both.
After the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty.
The presiding judge, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N20, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Sadiq ordered that the surety must have a reliable address and reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He adjourned the matter until April 14 for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
