The Buhari Vanguard has said that Nigeria is more united when the people irrespective of tribe, religion or region rose in unison to out rightly condemn the recent assassination attempt on the life of a former Head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement issued to journalists in Abuja yesterday, signed by chairman of the group, Comrade Jasper Azuatalam, the Vanguard noted that the overwhelming condemnation from Nigerians is an indication that Nigerians are indeed their brother’s keeper, irrespective of the effort made by mischief makers and enemies of the country to divide the people along ethnic, religious and tribal lines.
The Vanguard said it is elated by the love, care and sympathy shown to Gen Muhammadu Buhari by Nigerians across all walks of life, given that Nigerians from diverse ethnic or religious backgrounds, the Hausas, Yorubas, Igbos and other ethnic minorities, as well as Christians, Muslims and pagans have also got together in decrying this act of cowardice and wickedness done against Buhari and other Nigerians.
While noting that Gen Buhari and family are grateful to Nigerians for the overwhelming love and sympathy shown to them during their trial period, the Vanguard maintained that this show of love by Nigerians explains why the former Head of state is insisting that “Our struggle for better, united and prosperous Nigeria is unrelenting, unstoppable and forward-marching.”
“This demonstration of love and concern is the reason Muhammadu Buhari will never abandon the Nigeria project and will continue to put in his best to see that Nigerians get the best that they deserve. We assure Nigerians that Muhammadu Buhari will never take their love and loyalty for granted” part of the statement reads.
It could be recalled that on Wednesday, July 23, a suicide bomber attempted to kill Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) on his way to Daura, his home town, alongside his aides and security details.
Since then, according to the Vanguard, lots of well-wishes, sympathy and love have been pouring in from different quarters. Religious leaders from the Christian and Muslim communities have lent their voices in condemnation of the attempted assassination, which many consider as an attempt to “assassinate” Nigeria. Traditional leaders from the Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and ethnic minorities were not left out, as they have all added their voice in condemnation to the attack.
The Vanguard stated that, even the Presidency and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alongside the leading opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) have all spoken against what is also considered an attempt to plunge Nigeria into turmoil.
“This has shown that Nigerians have remained their brother’s keeper, irrespective of the effort made by mischief-makers and enemies of our dear country to divide us along ethnic, religious and tribal lines. We hope that this will restore the unity, patriotism and tolerances that Nigerians were known for before now. We can only defeat this carnage of terrorism if we come together with one purpose and goal” it further stated.
