The Catholic secretariat of Nigeria has expressed displeasure over the burning of the St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Funtua, in Katsina state by gunmen, most of whom were allegedly youths.
A statement issued from the office of the catholic secretariat said the parish priest of St. Teresa and his assistant; fathers Kelvin Obineche, Lemark Peter lamented the fact that the incident had happened three times in the same parish since it was created.
“Some armed men, largely youths, forced their way into our parish compound and wrecked havoc.
“These people went on rampage alleging that a Christian corps member used an insultive language on the Prophet- Mohammed (PBUH).
“No live was lost, but every of our property was destroyed. This is the third time this ugly event is taking place in the same place. The first time was on the 11th of March 1987.
“The second took place on April 18th 2011, during the post election riot and this one that took place about noon on the 31st of March 2014. This wreckage is coming just two weeks after we completed the renovation of the damage of 2011”, the statement said and called on government and other Stake holders to rescue the situation.
