Akure, the Ondo State capital will host over 6000 athletes and officials, have begin a 10-day quest for individual and collective honours.
It is the 33nd edition of the Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA), was formally declared open by Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
While welcoming the athletes and officials drawn from 53 Federal Ministries, parastatas, departments and agencies to Akure ahead of the kick off ceremony, the organisers of the games have assured both the participants and sports fans of an exciting tournament, which will feature 14 sports.
The sports are football, badminton, table tennis, squash, volleyball, scrabble, swimming, athletics, chess, handball, basketball and others.
Meanwhile, the defending champions, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who has came tops in every edition of the tournament, has also vowed to retain their title for one more year, while other participating ministries, departments and agencies have promised to give them a run for their money.
Yesterday, the organisers held a pre-tournament seminar to educate athletes and their officials on the rules of the games and to also create awareness for the competition.
Speaking ahead of today’s opening of the games, FEPSGA President, Comrade Hassan Dahiru said the modalities have been put in place to ensure that only eligible athletes took part in the games.
He revealed that the games will hold in two venues, Akure Township Stadium and Federal University of Technology (FUT), Akure.
