The peaceful rally organised by Jimeta Progressive Association,JIPA in Adamawa state protesting the continuous closure of Yola North Secretariat and suspension of the council’s chairman,Alhaji Mahmoud Abba for alleged misconduct was attacked by some hoodlums.
Our correspondent in Yola reports that as the Jimeta residents gathered at the Old Palace Hotel near Yola North Secretariat, Tuesday for the billed protest, some unscrupulous youths led by one Ex-convict named Godiya throwing the gathering in to confusion.
As the group of hoodlums carrying and brandishing dangerous weapons including;sharp axes,cutlasses,daggers and sticks arrived the venue, suddenly started smashing vehicles parked to convey protesters billed to be taken to state Assembly to lodge official complaint to Lawmakers at the state Assembly.
Recall that the elected chairman of Yola North, Alhaji Mahmoud Abba was suspended by the State Assembly following a petition by some councillors of the council who accused him of misconduct.
Despite the little skirmishes the protesters besieged the House of Assembly holding placards with inscriptions such as “We want true democracy in Yola North” and “Let Yola North be treated equally like other LGAs” presented a letter of demand to the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Francis Gbanseso who received them.
king before presenting the letter, spokesman of the community, Alhaji Usman Ibrahim said the people were concern over the sustain closure of the secretariat and suspension of the chairman for the past nine months by the assembly.
Ibrahim alleged that the assembly action was prompted by a lawmaker in the assembly whose attempt to hijack the council but was rebuffed by the chairman.
“We also want to register our protest over the recent displacement of over 500 of our community members at the Jimeta modern market whose sites were later allocated to some selected few by some people in government,” Ibrahim said.
Ibrahim accused some top government officials and the said lawmaker representing Yola North of impunity and recklessness in the political turmoil in the council lamenting that in the whole country it is only here(Yola North) that has been shut for selfish and personal interest .
Also speaking at the gathering, Former Speaker in the state Assembly,Hassan Turaki accused Governor Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla’s administration of wickedness and injustice for not intervening in to the matter.
Turaki who noticed visibly angry said this is democracy not dictatorial era so people’s wish must prevail ll other interests if really peace must take its rightful place or else it will be a different story entirely.
