An Abuja Grade 1 Area court sitting in Lugbe, has sentenced a middle-aged man, Shehu Abdullahi, to six months imprisonment for stealing car batteries.
The Magistrate, Mr. Gambo Garuba, however, gave the convict an option of N8,000 fine.
The convict, who had earlier pleaded not guilty to the theft charge, pleaded for the court’s leniency.
In his plea for mercy, Abdullahi said “my lord, it was the handiwork of the devil. I promise not to do that again.’’
The prosecutor, Cpl. Anigbo Paul, had told the court that Abdullahi of no fixed address trespassed on a private premises at OAGF quarters, FHA, Lugbe, where he vandalized two cars and stole batteries and stereos in them.
He told the court that the accused, who also stole battery from a generator, was caught by the security guard in the premises and was handed over to the police.
He said that the offence contravened the provision of section 287 of the Penal code. (NAN)
