The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria FMAN has commended the wheat farmers in Jigawa state for a timely production of wheat in the state.
The commendation was made by the head of FMAN Sarah Huber while delivering her speech at an annual of the association held at Maje village area of Taura local government Jigawa state.
Sarah Huber who also decried low production of wheat in the state, urges Jigawa farmers to double their efforts on wheat production for more food security in Nigeria.
She explained that, as part of FMAN effort to boost local wheat production, fifteen local government from three state Jigawa, Kano and Kebbi for the program while in Jigawa Taura, Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Malam-Madori and Kafin Hausa local governments are selected.
According to her, 5,000 farmers received training while 700 farmers participated in intensive outgrower program with input loans to increase farmer yields.
She maintained that, the research farm was established in Ringim local government with support of Lake Chad Research Institute for new seeds varieties from Mexico and Sudan and improved agronomic practices.
Sarah Huber then assured more partnering with organizations across the value chain to improve farmers yields through high quality seeds, expanded extension services and improved access to irrigation.
While speaking on behalf of farmers, the National chairman wheat farmers association Dr Saddiq Ahmad, assured more improvements in wheat farming particularly with new varieties of deeds and research farm.
