To mark the International Albinism Awareness Day, the Medicaid Foundation has donated N10,000 to each Albino person.
The founder of the foundation, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, marked the albino day in Kebbi in a joint program between the Kebbi State Government, Medicaid Cancer Foundation and The Albino Foundation (TAF) Kebbi Chapter.
In 2013, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism. “Strength Beyond All Odds” is the theme for this year’s International Albinism Awareness Day.
The theme was chosen to: Highlight the achievements of people with albinism around the world, and to show that people with albinism can defy all odds.
The First Lady, who was represented by the Senior Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Hajiya Memuna Sulaiman Jega, reiterated the support of her excellency to the people with Special Needs in the State, with a promise to do more for the Albinos.
She reminded all persons of their medical needs and predisposition to skin cancer and eye defects. “It is therefore necessary to support them with creams with sunscreen, anti glare sunshades and encourage regular eye checks”, she added.
The Assistant Coordinator, Medicaid Foundation Kebbi, Mukhtasar Alkali, highlighted the importance of the International Albinism Awareness Day and why awareness should be raised owing discrimination face by people with albinism.
