From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
There is great apprehension amongst parents in Benue State following threat by the dreaded Boko Haram sect to attack Government College, Makurdi.
Government College, one of the oldest secondary schools in the state, where the incumbent governor, Gabriel Suswam passed out from, is primarily a boarding school having a population of over 500 boarding and 200 day students.
Peoples Daily investigation revealed that most parents thronged the college at the weekend to take their children home.
It was also observed that most of the students were living in fear despite the presence of security operatives at the college.
Speaking with newsmen on the threat, the college principal Mr. Geoffrey Ugudu Apine said on May 14, 2014, they received a letter entitled Boko Haram which was slipped through the door of the school hall and another through the staff room door.
Mr. Ugudu further said that the letter was written in pidgin English, intimating the college of an attack on the school on Monday, May 19, (today).
Also spotted at the college was the DPO, ‘D’ division, CSP Attah M., who assured that the police is on red alert to avert any attack from the sect, while the state Police Command Public Relations officer ASP Daniel Ezeala said the Command has stepped-up security within the state and urged the people to be security conscious.
