The Kano State House of Assembly passed total number of 50 bills since its inception about three years ago, the Speaker, Hon. Isiyaku Ali Danja has said.
Danja, who disclosed this yesterday while speaking at the opening of the 2014 legislative retreat for members of the State Assembly in Abuja said the House had within the same period passed resolutions on more than 1000 motions which have impacted on the wellbeing of the people of the State.
He said the retreat will provide an avenue for extensive deliberations on topic having direct bearing on legislative processes and “enhance capacity building requirements, thereby keeping the members up-to-date with the best legislative process.”
Declaring open the retreat, Kano State Deputy Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said governance in Kano is predicated on the principles of openness, transparency, prudence and accountability which resulted in unprecedented achievements by the administration in the last three years.
Representative of the British Department of International Development (DFID) Mr. Kevin Conroy said they have in liaison with the State House of Assembly harmonized about 229 extant tax laws in the 44 local government areas in Kano to 40.
Mr. Conroy maintained that after making analysis of the tax laws, the DFID came up with a report which recommended that the laws be harmonized and that as a result of the new legislations, the internally generated revenue of the local government and the State has increased in addition to improving business environment.
