Kano State government is spending N18 million for the renovation of the Kano state council secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
This was disclosed by the state chairman, NUJ, Kano state Council, Comrade Abduljalal Haruna, at a workshop on election organised by the state’s council to mark the 2014 Press Week at the Murtala Muhammad Library in Kano.
The chairman stated that the state government would directly spend the sum of money through the Kano State Ministry of Works and Housing.
“ Our council is not involved in the contract. It is under the supervision and coordination of the ministry’s commissioner.” He said.
Haruna also stated that the essence of inviting election stakeholders to the workshop is to enlighten the public on credible elections for the forthcoming Local Governments elections in the state.
“The essence of inviting the election stakeholders such as the Police, State Security Service (SSS), Road Safety Corps, INEC officials and other stakeholders is to enlighten the public on conducting credible, free and fair election ahead of the forthcoming Local Government Elections in the state. Therefore there is a need to solve the problems of election between the media and the security agents as well as the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in order to have credible elections.”
