Angry mob in Okwe quarters in Asaba, Delta State on Monday allegedly beat up a housewife to coma following stolen pots of prepared soup from her neighbour’s kitchen in the early hours.
Eyewitness Miracle Ebi said that the suspect identified as Mary Okonkwo,a mother of two children has been the bread winner in her matrimonial house after the husband who used to drive for one of the big transport companies in the state lost his job for alleged stealing and sharp practices before the bubble burst on the fateful day
It was gathered that the woman a petty trader had in the early hours tip -toed out of her room after she had seen her neighbour warming the prepared pots of soup said to have been loaded with pieces of meat including disarming and inviting aroma which attracted the suspect to hid behind a door watching the movement of the owner of the pots of soup who after a period of time was said to have dashed into her room from the kitchen only before her return, the suspect quickly removed the pots and disappeared into the thin air
It was further gathered that while the suspect was battling with the two pots of soup, the angry mob who sighted her moved into her room and unfortunately for the two pots of soup were on the floor of her room and upon interrogation, she admitted to the crime after she was beating blue black by the mob, saying that she stole the pots of soup because she and her family members have been hungry without food, adding that it was her first time to steal since she got married few years ago to her husband.
Investigation revealed that there has been hue and cry of missing pots of soup in Okwe quarters in the last few weeks, especially prepared soups,a situation some of the residents who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity attributed to hunger and poor economic growth, adding that the situation might continue as the leadership of the country has nothing tangible to improve on the already destroyed economic
Speaking to our reporter, an elder statesman in the area Ogbueshi Chika Osakwe said” this is attributed to the bad leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari who up until now has not provided Nigerians the platform to deal with hunger adding that the woman suspect claimed she was hungry and an angry man is a hungry man and appealed to President Buhari to improve on Nigeria”s economic as the only way to make Nigeria can be Independent and deal with hunger
But the Police officers at Okwe quarters in Asaba refused to speak on the issue, saying that the woman is still being detained for further investigation, adding that the suspect confessed to the crime.
In a swift reaction, the Police Commissioner in the state, Adeleke Adeyinka who confirmed the incident to Journalists in Asaba, said that the suspect will be charged to court on completion of investigation adding that cases of stealing pots of soup in the fire was becoming too rampant in the state in the recent times.
He assured of the police commitment to protect the lives and properties of the people in the state.
The suspect was said to have been beating servely by the mob as she fell into coma before she was revived by her neighbours who begged the angry mob to let her off the hook but her husband who refused to give her name said he was not aware of his wife attitude to stealing, especially pots of soup
