The Niger state government has commended the Federal Government for distributing free fishing implements worth N20 million to 3, 000 fishermen across 15 Local Government Areas in the state who were affected by the 2012 flood disaster.
Alhaji Isma’ila Ahmed, acting chairman Borgu Local Government Area of the state made the commendation in Borgu during the distribution of fishing nets, sinkers, floaters, head and leg ropes to 800 victims from Borgu and Agwara local governments affected by the flood.
“On behalf of the governor of Niger state, and entire people of Borgu, we wish to express our profound gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, for their wisdom and initiative in providing palliative for flood affected fishermen in our local government area”, he said.
Ahmed said the measure would improve the socio-economic status of the victims and that of the area.
He said the measure would cushion the effect of the flood on the victims, ensure continuity in their activities and generate employment for them.
In his remark, Alhaji Haliru Kintoro, Emir of Borgu who spoke on behalf of the fishermen said that he would ensure equitable distribution of the implements and assured that the fishermen would put them into good use.
