The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), has urged the Federal government to bring the killers of Principal Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, to justice, in the interest of peace.
Oyerinde was killed on Friday, May 4, 2012, in his home at 2nd Ugbor community, Benin City.
The appeal was contained in a press statement on the killing, signed by NOPRIN Foundation National Coordinator of the non-governmental organisation committed to promoting police accountability and respect for human rights, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma.
It urged the various security agencies of government in the country not to gloss over the pending cases of alleged extra-judicial killings, including Oyerinde’s, in the interest of justice.
NOPRIN accused the House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Petitions for commending the police and SSS in its report and therefore tasked the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to study both reports, resolve the conflicts therein and give legal advice that will lead to the apprehension and prosecution of the real killers.
“On this second memorial of the murder of Olaitan Oyerinde, NOPRIN calls on President Jonathan to set up an independent panel of inquiry to examine and review the reports of the police and DSS, with a view to resolving the contradictions and identifying the actual killers of Olaitan Oyerinde and bringing them to justice. President Jonathan must demonstrate commitment to end impunity in Nigeria,” the statement concluded
