The police yesterday arraigned a 25-year-old female hairdresser, Chioma Eze, in a Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, charged with joint act and cheating.
The prosecutor, Silas Nanpan, told the court that one Jacinta Nenge reported the matter at the Nyanya Police Station, Abuja, on April 18.
Nanpan said that Nenge was at the salon of the accused person to make her hair when the accused person engaged her in a discussion.
He added that the accused person claimed to be a soothsayer and deceived the complainant to believe that she could pray for her in order to protect her from future car accident.
According to Nanpan, the accused person’s accomplice, who is currently at large, made away with the complainant’s purse containing her cell phone, cash, a wristwatch and other valuables valued at N28, 650 as the complainant listened to the accused person’s claim.
The prosecutor said that the purse was later recovered from the salon of the accused person, noting that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 79 and 321 of the Penal Code.
However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the offences.
The presiding judge, Hassan Ishaq, granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Ishaq said the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and the address must be verified by the registrar of the court.
The judge also ordered that the surety must submit his drivers’ licence or national Identity card to the court’s registrar and adjourned the case till May 14. (NAN)
