From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna
A member representing Giwa/ Birnin Gwari Federal Constituency, Honourable Shamsudeen Ango Abdullahi, has said the major problem of election in Nigeria is the lack of will to act free and fair during elections and this has affected the country’s democracy negatively.
The lawmaker made the assertion while speaking to newsmen in Kaduna yesterday.
According to him, the word free and fair has stung on the tongue of many in this country but they lack the will to act in that direction so they voted whosoever is able to manipulate their will power and this kind of exercise cannot be said to be free and fair election.
To solve this problem, Ango-Abdullai advised Nigerians not to only confess free and fair election but to have the will power to act accordingly.
When speaking on the political set up of the country, the lawmaker said a party should promote internal democracy and give people chance based on the constitution and electoral act so that they can vote people they like in primary election and get what they want.
But in a situation where there is no identified internal democracy, here can never have a free and fair election, he insisted.
He added that INEC based the 2015 general election time table on the 2011 electoral act but as usual every four years there are amendments to electoral act which will be done before 2015.
