The Rotary Club of Gwarimpa, Abuja, has said it spent about N600,000 to install a borehole at Junior Secondary School, Gwarimpa 1.
The President of the club, James Ugbeda, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), at the weekend, after the commissioning of the borehole.
He said the provision of clean water would ensure good health for the students.
‘’One of the six areas of focus in the Rotary is water and sanitation and the provision of water for the children was a way of achieving these goals,’’ Ugbeda said.
He said the school was the best place for the project as it has many people from the different geo-political zones who would enjoy the facility.
“If we do this project in a particular community, we will just have those particular set of people benefiting mainly from the project.
“ But in the school, we have the Gbagyis, Hausas, Fulanis, Ibos and different tribes cut across the geo-political zones who will benefit from the project,’’ the club president said.
Ugbeda commended the efforts of the Managing Director, Nigeria Export Import Bank (NEXIM), Mr Robert Orya, who enormously contributed in facilitating the project.
He also called on the school administration to ensure that the facility was properly maintained for the purpose of sustainability.
On her part, the school’s Principal, Mrs Uwem Idiok, commended the efforts by the Rotary, saying water was life and what the Rotary did was giving life to the people of the school.
“I am very elated and I thank the almighty God and the Rotary for giving us water. As we all know, water is life and this will actually improve the hygiene and sanitation of the school.
“I have already set up a committee that will take care of the facility to ensure that it is properly maintained,’’ she added.
Idiok, however, said the school lacked a functional library, adequate classrooms, toilet and sporting infrastructure and equipment and needed interventions.
Also, the Chairman, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Umar Ningi, called on individuals and the general public to support by providing quality education for all children in the FCT.
Ningi, represented by Mr Benjamin Ogbara, a Permanent FCT UBE Board member, said the board was working towards ensuring a conducive learning environment for students and teachers within the FCT. (NAN)
