Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has advocated for the need to create a special security fund for the Nigerian army and other security agencies to enable them acquire modern sophisticated weapons.
He said the current security challenges in Nigeria have necessitated the acquisition of such weapons by the security agencies to end the various problems bedeviling the country.
Governor Tambuwal made this call when he led his Zamfara state counterpart, Dr. Bello Mohammed on an assessment tour to the Nigerian Army Super Camp four yesterday, in Faskari, Katsina state .
According to him, the special fund will augment budgetary allocation for the security agencies to procure needed warfares required to accomplish their goals.
“The Nigerian army and other security agencies need more funding. This will enable them acquire modern and sophisticated weapons. Funding is key in the provision of security hardwares, because of modern day security challenges.That is why I am calling for a special security fund for them”.
On his part, the Zamfara state, Governor, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawale also called on Nigerians to sink their political differences and support the Nigerian army in the efforts to make the country safe.
“We should not politicise the issue of security. Everybody is a stakeholder. All of us have a role to play in the current security challenges facing Nigeria. Changing the security structure will not solve the security challenges. Instead, we should join hands with the military by giving them necessary information and credible intelligence on criminals”.
The two Governors thanked the Federal Government and the troops of Operation Sahel Sanity for tackling banditry and other crimes in the Northwest.
They however urged the troops not to rest on their oars, assuring the chief of army staff, Lieutenant Tukur Buratai of their total support.
General Buratai had earlier conducted the two Governors round the camp and briefed them about operations there.
