There was widespread protest yesterday at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) headquarters in Abuja over the removal of Mr Usman Gur Mohammed as the Managing Director on Tuesday.
The members of the unions comprising the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) at TCN branch were outside the Power House building housing TCN headquarters and the Federal Ministry of Power, chanting protest songs.
The Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, on Tuesday announced the removal of the TCN head.
He was replaced by Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as the head of TCN in acting capacity, with immediate effect.
Abdulaziz was the Regional Transmission Manager (RTM), Abuja Region of TCN.
However, Mr Usman Gur Mohammed was quoted as saying that he was not appointed on the pages of newspapers and there was approval of the President, therefore, he would await the approval of the President before vacating the office.
“I will insist on the approval of the President before I vacate office. Once I see the approval of the President, I will handover,” he was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), Chris Okonkwo who was removed recently by the TCN MD said, his removal was null and void because due process was not followed.
“My removal was null and void because due process was not taken. He (Gur) didn’t have the authority to do such. He was out to victimise me and unfortunately for him, he rather caused himself embarrassment.
“I would not say (that he was removed because of me) but what I would say that my removal drew attention to his shenanigans and his demeanor and coincidentally it happened within the same time.
“He caused attention to be drawn to himself. Somebody you are trying to kill will try to defend himself.
“I wrote to the Minister of Power and I copied Minister of Labour. Incidentally they were addressing it through the dispute between the unions. Gur did not want it to be concluded. He acted before the time” he said.
