A committee set up by Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara state under the leadership of Professor Tukur Adamu yesterday submitted its report recommending the total overhaul of the education sector in the state.
The committee which was set up to investigate and report to the state government, obstacles that constituted rough roads towards the development of secondary school education, had visited all the four zonal offices at Gusau, Anka, Talata Mafara and Kaura Namoda local governments.
The committee reported that, out of the total number of 191 public secondary schools across the state, only 21 are operating as boarding schools and were absolutely in dearth of required facilities that would facilitate conducive atmosphere for both teaching and learning.
It further informed that, most of the schools hostels were not spacious enough to accommodate the number of students undergoing studies which clearly indicate possiblity the high risk of health, adding that even toilets were absolutely dilapidated to the extent some have to be abandoned.
It has been recorded that most of the schools were suffering lack of water, the situation which expelled the students to spend hours supposed to be in classes in search of water outside the schools premises in the course of which they could have contact with waterborne diseases.
In his response, Governor Yari has challenged that, huge amount of money were being pumped to ensure sound education, and was not expecting any report indicating lack of facilities in secondary schools as the main reason of down fall of education in the state.
He assured the implementation of all recommendations made by the committee, adding that the state government would do everything possible to ensure those that were sabotaging the efforts of the government must face wrath of the law.
